Thanks for all the info and the clarification - RFC3442 mentions a "standard 576 octet maximum size for a DHCP message" (which might become too short) and since 576 is more than double of 255, I thought that the lenght byte cannot mean the length of the rest in bytes, so it should rather mean the number of "routing table entries".
