I beg to differ. For anything that has make variables, you can override
them on the command line, or with automated editing through, for
instance, sed or perl.

So what?  If they need to reshuffle their dnsmasq.spec all day long,
they are attacking some particular problem from the wrong angle.

Providing a description of the problem here will probably help. It is
not as though Simon were not listening to packagers.
