I had a similar situation as yourself but with a lister fr1 in a small narrow gauge locomotive

If your firing the engine for the first time by hand it's best to turn the engine over 20 times before really putting some effort in to start the engine - the best recommendation I can make is to get yourself a copy of the original lister FR manual it is full of useful info for starting and maintenance.
