I agree. It should be possible to have both behaviuors: fall back to a
dynamic IP address if the fixed fails, or fail completely if the fixed
fails.

If  this behaviuor can be obtained by mean of different configurations
(using "mixed" ranges or "fixed-only" ranges) this should be indicated
in the documentation, maybe with two simple examples.

Another  addition to documentation should be the one about the hack to
avoid using host unique id's but only MAC addresses to identify hosts.

(Or  maybe they are already mentioned in the docs, but I have not read
it through enough?)
