I've done some tweaking and re-writes since the last release, and it
should work fine without a menu now, just provide the filename in
--dhcp-boot.
dnsmasq-2.46test13, in the usual place.

I, too tested with etherboot, and came to the conclusion that they don't
implement the PXE menu spec: It seemed to want to download the filename
supplied in DHCP request whatever I did, and not ever talk to a boot server.
The test13 release works better with gPXE, since it now sends the
filename (from --dhcp-boot) even when the client claims to be PXE (which
gPXE does). I suspect it won't work in proxy mode though.
I'm very happy to work with the gPXE developers.

No problem, thanks for your testing efforts.
Simon.
